Most of the dog owners would probably tell you that a cold, wet nose in your canine partner indicates a healthy puppy. Also, many believe that a dog is sick when his nose is dry, but is it true? Before we enter that debate, we have to understand first. The answer is simple: wet noses work better. Dogs depend on their interpretation of their world, and odor particles are best glued to the wet surfaces. That wet nose also cools your dog in hot days, similar to how the pantheus regulates its body temperature. The lining of your dog's nose contains glands that produce special rocks that keep your nostrils wet, along with the production of a clear and watery liquid that helps you keep it cool. Dogs also lick their noses regularly to keep them clean. All that smells can result in dirt and pollen collecting around your dog's nostrils, and licking serves two purposes: not only keeps your dog's nose wet, but puppies can also interpret the smell through taste, thanks to a highly specialized olfactory organ called Jacobson organ. So what does it mean when a dog's nose is dry? As convenient as it would be to have an easy way to measure the disease in dogs, there are several perfectly normal reasons why a dog's nose can be hot or dry, and it is worth noting that sick dogs can have a wet nose, too. Let's take a look at some possible explanations about why your dog's nose might be dry: A hot and dry nose does not always mean problems, but it can certainly be a sign of fever, dehydration, or even conditions like a dry eye. If your dog's dry nose is accompanied by other symptoms, such as lethargy, vomiting or diarrhea, or changes in activity or appetite, contact your veterinarian for advice. Looking at and touching your dog's gums and noting your color can produce more accurate information than your nose. If the gums are wet, that is a sign of good hydration. If they are very dry, or malhumorated, it could be a sign of dehydration. If the gums are a nice rose, like a person's, it's a good sign. Pale gums can be an indication of anemia or low blood pressure. If your dog has bright red or blue-colored rubbers, it should be examined by a veterinarian immediately. But this time when it tickles you, you notice that your dog's nose is dry and warm to the touch. Does that mean he's sick? Not at all. A dog's nose naturally changes from wet and fresh to warm and dry several times during the course of a day. Most of the time, a dry dog nose is a completely normal physical phenomenon. But should you be worried? Why is a dog nose wet? There are two reasons why a dog's nose is naturally wet: The dog nose is dry: Should I be worried? More often, a dog's dry nose is nothing to worry about. Some dogs naturally have dried noses than others, for one thing. A dry nose could simply indicate that a dog just woke up from a nap in the sun or near a heater or that his four-legged friend needs a drink of light dehydration water. But sometimes a dog's dry nose can be a side effect of a medical problem, such as: Dog Nose Running? A spongy nose could also indicate a health problem in a dog. Additional nasal discharge may indicate a serious underlying problem, such as a higher respiratory infection. Although usually a dog's wet or dry nose is nothing to worry about, it can be a subtle sign of a larger medical problem. Most of the time, if a dog's dry nose is something to worry about, you will see changes in your dog's behavior, such as lethargy, poor appetite or vomiting, which indicates a visit to a veterinarian is necessary. If it seems as creepy as ever, it's probably nothing to worry about, but it's still worth watching if. To smell the true meaning of your dog's dry nose allows you to determine whether it is healthy or a symptom on which you should be concerned.
